‘Nothing happens by coincidence, it’s all meant to be’. In the magical year 2012 Selma Sevenhuijsen discovered an image of a double-tailed mermaid, traditionally a symbol of the feminine Divine, in St. Peter’s in Rome. She sits above the tomb of Matilda of Canossa, an Italian countess from the 11th century, whose funerary monument was designed by the famous sculptor Bernini. Selma wanted to know what was behind this and started on a journey. In this book she takes the reader with her on her voyage of discovery right across Italy along places where Matilda has left her traces. Matilda’s life contains a surprisingly topical message for anyone who cares about the position of the feminine in religion. The makers of Matilda’s tomb left a sign about this for those who have eyes to see. ‘Il tempo ritorna’, the time returns…

This is a touchy-feely 'how I communicate with Matilda' piece of fiction. For anyone interested in history the book will be a huge disappointment.

Queen of the Vatican Journey in the footsteps of Matilda of Canossa Selma Sevenhuijsen Dafne M Arlman 9781511521857 Books Reviews

I just finished reading a wonderful book about Matilda of Canossa. It is by Selma Sevenhuijsen whose journey began when she became aware of a double tailed mermaid on the tomb of Matilda in the Vatican. She embarked on a tour of Matilda’s places in Italy seeking to discover the meaning of this symbol. The result is a fascinating catalogue of history, symbolism and spirituality. The is a great book to read on a number of levels. If you are interested in Matilda (the only woman whose remains are found in St Peter’s in Rome) then this book follows her life and journey through the 11th and 12th centuries. As a guide book to some of the hidden places of Northern and Central Italy this is a wonderful treasure trove of information and insight. Finally, this book contains a wealth of knowledge and information about the symbolism, layout and design in Italy’s churches and cathedrals. This is not only about Matilda, or Italy; it is about you and your journey in life and what you can learn from Selma’s findings and understanding of the symbolism as it relates to your spiritual journey today. A must buy.
