Book 4 in the bestselling "Vampire for Hire" series!
Mother, wife, private investigator...vampire. Six years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.
Now in MOON CHILD, private investigator Samantha Moon is faced with an impossible decision―a decision that no mother should ever have to make. A decision that will change her life, and those she loves, forever.
And through it all, Sam finds herself in a lethal game of vampire vs. vampire as a powerful―and desperate―enemy will stop at nothing to claim what he most desires.

Sam is still struggling with her sons mortality, and how she can possibly change it. The men in her life seem to be overwhelming her with unwanted advances, conflicting careers and a deep connection she has her hands full. She meets some new characters some (quite literally) wonderful and others who are absolutely horrifying. The scenes dealing with her sons mortality were heartbreaking and emotionally intense. My allergies had my eyes watering during each of these scenes. (They conveniently only acted up when the author broached the subject of Anthony) I'm not sure who she spoke to, but they seemed a lot like Jack from the Knighthorse books. I was pleased with her decision and shocked that others were not.
We finally meet Archibald Maximus in this book. (Another of my favorite characters in the Rainverse) I laughed so hard when Sam was googling him. This character is exactly who Sam has needed in her life.
The villain in this book is horrifying! What he does is insane, and he seems to know Sam too well. He knows exactly how to move her strings and get what he wants.
Sam's choice at the end was disappointing to me. I suppose it was the safe choice, and she wasn't willing to take the risk of losing the other, more obvious, choice.

Moon Child Vampire for Hire Book 4 eBook JR Rain Reviews
I've got a few "issues" with this book. First is the length. It's really a novella. Not a novel. It was much too short for the money paid. Perhaps if there were an additional 100 pages or so, some of the issues I have with the story line could have been tied up. As it is, it felt rushed and unfinished.
I've really grown fond of Sam during these first 4 books of the series. I love her strength and determination balanced with her vulnerability. She will protect her children regardless of the sacrifices to herself even as she still struggles with who, and what, she is.
Obviously when reading any paranormal novel, you must suspend your belief system. That being said, there are a few too many things in this book that just push that belief suspension too far.
*** Warning - SPOILERS ***
Take the medallion. You're telling me that the ancient vampire 1000 years old or more has not been able to find the medallion and Sam, the newbie just happens to have it? And that no one seems to know how the medallion really works but Sam is able to figure that out in less than 2 days? And when Sam puts on the medallion it magically bonds to her such that it can't be removed until she dies but yet she just happens to run across the guy who knows just how to fix that? Keep in mind that the vamp that attacked her had the medallion and it was "...worn by [her] attacker...". Was is bonded to him to? It was inferred that it was hanging from his neck and not bonded to his skin. Add to that, the conveniently available Maximus knows how to reverse the vampirism? But yet there is only enough for 1 dose? In the entire vampire universe there is only 1 medallion and 1 dose? Not logical. None of this really hangs together well.
Going back to our ancient vamp - bow tie man. He wants to die but there's no way to kill him. Given that the laws of physics seem to apply to just about everything else in this story, seems to me dismemberment and incineration should be sufficient to do in just about anyone. It's just too difficult to believe there's no way to kill the guy. I could believe he simply wanted to be human again, tired of being a vamp for so long. But to want the medallion just so he can die? Again... not logical.
Oh and one more thing. It really bugged me that there was no attempt on Sam's part to explain that her son's "cure" might be reversible. Instead she lets Danny believe it's permanent. Given that she's sympathetic to the fact he loves his son, you'd think she'd at least give him this hope.
First, let me say that I love Samantha Moon. She is so different than the average vampire female. Samantha is a mother, a wife, a sister and a detective trying to make her way in this new vampire world on her own, well, almost alone. She is funny, quick, and sympathetic. The people that Sam meets on her journey are as interesting as she. Her relationship with her husband, soon to be ex, is very recognizable to any person having gone through a divorce. The tension between Sam and her estranged husband, Danny, can be felt, and makes the reader feel uncomfortable when they are together.
Having said that, J.R. Rain needs to hire a better proofreader. In each Vampire for Hire book, the proofreading mistakes were very distracting. When a reader gets into a flow of reading, an error is like a stop sign out of nowhere. It pulls you up short, and then you have to find your place and get back into the flow. Also, Samantha told Fang, her Internet "friend," twice about her decision in regard to her son, once on the phone and then in the bar later. The dialogue was the same. What?? Also, some of the dialogue seemed like it was repeated from the other books. Another problem for me was the spiritual beings guiding and helping Samantha. They just seemed a bit too convenient. I also thought the ending was rather contrived. The connection with Fang was so played up, but then he is just cut loose without much storyline. I felt the loose ends were wrapped up too neatly. The reader is asked to suspend their disbelief a bit too much this go around with the Lifetaker in the hills, Leland the Ghost, the spirit guides, and Archibald Maximus coming in with happy ending.
Finally, before I get too many haters out there, let me say that, over all, I loved Moon Child. I have really loved these books. This one I felt was the weakest, but I still loved the twists and turns. Samantha is a tigress when it comes to her child. These feelings
are so realistically described. Mothers, well most, will do anything for their children-Anything! The desperation Sam feels is palpable. The time crunch that she is under adds to the suspense. The villain is an awesome one because he seems so innocuous in his little bow tie. The increased relationship with Detective Sherbet moved Sam's character forward, as does her revulsion at Danny's advances. The turmoil over Fang and Kingsley, which has to be set aside for her child, is very realistic, but Kingsley's help throws Sam back into his arms again at the end, with Fang on the back burner. I can't decide which guy that I like for Sam, which is another thing that keeps me coming back.
Okay, I do love Samantha Moon and all of her friends. These books are awesome! I love the cases, the vampire journey on which Sam finds herself, the different take on the vampire story, the humanity in what is supposed to be inhuman, and the tinge, but not sole focus, of romance. J. R. Rain has the winning combination!
